Money is so easy to spend—but it can be just as easy to save! Here are a few tips:

  • Make a budget (plan) for how to use your money.
  • Open a savings account at your credit union—and earn more money!

Here are some other tips that you can follow any time of year:

Don’t spend all of your allowance. If you’re lucky enough to get one, make sure that you put at least half of it into a savings account. Not only will you save money, you will gain interest—and you’ll have more money than you thought!

Save change.  If you get change when you buy something, put it in a container and save it. Ask your parents if you can save their change, too. You might be surprised at how much you can save.

Don’t buy souvenirs on vacation. Do you really need another t-shirt, mug, or hat? Perhaps you can take a few pictures instead. Pictures are colorful reminders of the fun that you had!

Visit the library. Instead of buying the latest books and CDs, visit your local library and borrow them. You might decide to try something new because you’re not spending money for it. Just remember to return what you borrow on time, or you’ll owe late fees!

These are tips that you can use all year-round. What other ideas can you think of? Talk to your friends and see how they’re planning to save money.
